Book Three: The Return of The
King
The battle for Middle-Earth has only begun. Gandalf and Pippin head
for Minas Tirith, where they find Boromir's father Denethor, steward
of Gondor preparing for battle. While the Rohan rides to Gondor's
aide taking Pippin with them, Aragorn accompanied by Legolas
and Gimli ride away from Rohan through the Paths of the Dead.
The Dead are ancient oathbreakers who rise to redeem themselves
by fighting with the one true king. Gondor is besieged and Faramir
is wounded. The Rohan arrive and Merry and Éowyn kill the
leader of the Black Riders. Aragorn and the Dead triumph over the
enemy on the plains of Lebennin and come to the aid of the men of
Gondor in the battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Meanwhile Pippin discovers Denethor, bewitched by Sauron, treatens
to kill himself and the wounded Faramir. Gandalf manages to save
Faramir. Aragorn heals Faramir, Éowyn and Merry.A party
marches to Mordor's gate, where Sauron's emissary triumphantly
waves Frodo's garments. Meanwhile Sam rescues Frodo and they set
off again. The ring bears heavily on Frodo, begging to be used,
but Sam keeps him steadfast. They reach the Crack, but Frodo cannot
part with the ring and claims its power for himself. Gollum unwittingly
saves the day he attacks Frodo, bites the ring from his finger
and in his delight accidently falls into the Crack of Doom. Mordor
crumbles to great rejoicing. Aragorn becomes King Elessar and
marries Arwen, daughter of the Elrond
The Hobbits return to the Shire to find it sacked by Saruman
and his men. They cast him out, he is then murdered by Wormtongue.
Frodo leaves for the Grey Havens in a white ship, with Bilbo,
Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond. Pippin, Merry and Sam watch, then
return home to the Shire.
